Drawing of a young man in costume on horseback

Drawing of a young man in costume on horseback c1517-18

This young man on horseback seen in profile wears a masquerade costume with feathers and ribbons and carries a lance in his right hand.

It is one of several drawings of a type attributed to Leonardo that are a testament to the artist’s interest in theatrical productions and costume design.

The drawing is difficult to date, but the pen technique suggests that it was probably executed late in the artist’s career. It is evidence of Leonardo’s involvement in courtly pageants and theatrical productions in the French court of Francis I during the last years of his life.
